Basic Bookkeeping Level 1 provides students with an understanding of the double entry system of bookkeeping and provides the essential accounting tools for the workplace. The course is especially beneficial for students planning to take a computer accounting program or use computer accounting in the workplace.

Course Prerequisites:   None.


This course provides students with a greater understanding of accounting and the procedures used to produce financial reports. Students learn about the different forms of business ownership (sole proprietorship, partnership and corporation), and then about the different types of organizations (service, merchandising, and manufacturing).

This course is designed for individuals who have no formal training in keyboarding. The objective is to teach students the skill of keyboarding - essential to the learning of other computer applications and workplace skills.

The course begins with an overview of the basics of computer use. Students learn about the components of the computer and keyboard, as well as the seating, posture, and hand positioning necessary for efficient keyboarding.

The student is first given an introduction to operating systems and to the evolution of MS-DOS. Then they are introduced to basic MS-DOS commands, conventions and procedures. Students learn how to navigate within MS-DOS and how to work with directories and files.

The content in this course is both conceptual and practical, and is intended to provide the student with a working knowledge of computing. This course will also help the student to assess and decide what type of computer is appropriate for their needs.

The Introduction to the Internet course will familiarize students with general Internet concepts and technology. The course is intended to teach students how to use and customize a Web browser.

Students are given an orientation to common procedures they can use to maximize successful use of the Internet and all its features.

They learn to sort and filter data, display and format data, and use simple queries to retrieve data. This course teaches students intermediate to advanced level concepts and features of the Microsoft Access application. In this course, students learn to create and work with relational databases. They build on the basic skills learned in the Access Level 1 course for working with queries, forms, and reports.

Students learn to create PivotTables and PivotCharts, import and export data, and create data access pages for use on the Web. They also learn to use macros, and to maintain, optimize, and document a database.

In this course, students learn to create and manage worksheets and workbook files; enter data and create basic formulas to perform calculations. They learn to edit and manipulate cell content, modify worksheet structure, view and format worksheets, and use Excel's predefined functions. Students use the Find and Replace feature, use themes to format workbooks and practice preparing, previewing, and printing worksheets.

The Excel Level 2 course teaches students intermediate- to advanced-level concepts and features of the Microsoft Excel application. In this course, students learn to customize Excel and streamline workflow by building upon the basic skills learned in the Excel Level 1 course.

This course teaches students advanced-level concepts and features of the Microsoft Excel application.

In this course, students learn to collaborate with others using revision tracking, protect and share workbooks, and use digital signatures to authenticate workbooks. They practice using a variety of advanced functions, analyzing and projecting data, and using macros to automate tasks. Students learn to watch and evaluate formulas, audit worksheets, and use Excel with other programs and the Web.

The Microsoft Outlook Level 1 course teaches students the fundamentals of the Microsoft Outlook application. In this course, students learn to use Outlook to manage email, contacts, scheduling, and tasks. They learn to send, receive, and manage email messages, use the Address Book and Contact list to manage contact information, and use the calendar for scheduling appointments and events. They learn to manage tasks and notes, and use the journal to track actions and items.

The Microsoft Outlook Level 2 course teaches students the fundamentals of the Microsoft Outlook application. In this course, students learn to customize Outlook, personalize and secure email messages, and organize and manage email effectively. They learn to use email signatures, and to secure email messages using encryption, and digital signatures. Students learn to sort and find messages, filter junk email, and use message flags for follow up. They also learn to use rules and desktop alerts, collaborate with others, and use instant messaging.

The Microsoft PowerPoint Level 1 course teaches students the fundamentals of this application and its usage within the Windows environment. Students learn to create, modify, and deliver electronic presentations. They learn to create slides containing text, tables, charts, diagrams, and graphics. Students practice customizing slides and finalizing presentations, and then learn to print and deliver slide shows.

The Microsoft PowerPoint Level 2 course teaches students intermediate- to advanced-level concepts and features of the Microsoft PowerPoint application. In this course, students learn to customize PowerPoint and create professional presentations by building upon the basic skills learned in the PowerPoint Level 1 course.

The Word Level 1 course teaches students the fundamentals of the Microsoft Word application. In this course, students learn to create and manage document files, and to enter, edit, and format text. They will utilize tables and columns to layout text, and proofing tools to check and finalize documents. Students then learn to create and modify hyperlinks and cross-references, and to preview and print documents.

The Microsoft Word Level 2 course teaches students intermediate- to advanced-level concepts and features of the Microsoft Word application.

In this course, students learn to customize Word and build upon the basic skills learned in the Word Level 1 course. They learn how to increase their productivity and enhance their documents using some of Microsoft Word's intermediate to advanced level features. They will be given ample opportunity to explore and practice these techniques throughout the course.

The Microsoft Word Level 3 course teaches students advanced-level concepts and features of the Microsoft Word application.

In this course, students learn to use mail merge, and work with fields, macros, large documents, and forms. They learn to merge form letters, emails, envelopes, and labels using a data source. Students work with fields and macros, and learn to use features that facilitate working with large documents, including generating an index, table of contents, and tables of figures and authorities. They also learn to create forms using form fields such as drop-down lists and check boxes.

This course will assist students in learning and practicing important office procedures, such as basic banking, records management, postal and courier services, telephone and fax services, dealing with the public, and using the Internet to research information.

Windows Vista Level 1 course provides an overview and introduction to the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system (Business Edition). Students will learn the basic concepts and most commonly used features and functions of Windows Vista. Students will learn the fundamentals of the Windows Vista operating system along with how to manage session and user accounts, navigate the Desktop and manipulate windows. They will learn how to configure Windows Internet Explorer, manage security and privacy settings and apply techniques for browsing Web sites and managing Internet files. Students will also learn how to personalize the Windows Vista environment and examine the methods of updating and protecting a computer. In addition, students will explore techniques for working with drives, folders, and files and learn to install and uninstall programs, including software updates. This course consists of six lessons, and an Exam Preparation Exercise.

Windows Vista Level 2 course is an advanced course. Its aim is to provide the student who is already familiar with the Windows Vista operating system (Business Edition) with an understanding of the more detailed techniques used to maintain Windows Vista and use it productively. Students will learn about installing and managing devices and drivers, sharing files and folders, remote computing, c ollaborating with others, optimizing performance and ease of use. This course consists of six lessons, and an Exam Preparation Exercise. The Exam Preparation Exercise is designed to prepare the student for the final exam.

To ensure successful completion of this course, it is recommended that students have completed Windows Vista Level 1, or possess equivalent knowledge and experience.
